Before your scan

How to prepare

You've booked your DEXA scan, but what do you need to do before to prepare? We have a few recommendations for you ahead of your appointment.

Individuals who have had previous surgeries or medical procedures involving metal implants may also need to consult with their doctor before undergoing a DEXA scan.

  1. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Because a DEXA scan requires you to lay down for about 10 minutes, we suggest you wear comfortable clothes. Athletic wear like leggings, sweatpants, or a T-shirt is a great choice.

  2. Avoid Wearing Metal

Ensure your clothing does not have an excessive amount of metals, such as zippers or buttons. We will also ask you to remove any metallic jewelry and accessories.

  3. Stay Hydrated, But Don't Overdo It

Drinking plenty of water is always a good idea, but for your DEXA scan, there's no need to over-hydrate. You can drink water as you normally would, but avoid over-drinking right before.

  4. Avoid Calcium Supplements 24 Hours Before

If you take calcium supplements, it's best to avoid them for at least 24 hours before your scan. It's OK to eat foods that naturally contain calcium, but steer clear of supplements.
